Changing Utility Suppliers Is Easier Than You Think

If you’re anything like me, you probably associate electricity and gas companies as the people who make you stay in for half a day so that they can come and read your meter or make some important engineering change to your equipment. They can never actually commit to a time – and even when you eventually pin them down to coming in the morning or the afternoon, they don’t always show when they say they will.

My dealings with utility suppleirs have, until recently, been nothing but one big hassle. That’s why, even although I suspected that I could save money by switching suppliers, I was somewhat reticent. I really thought that it would be a lot of fuss and involve me taking time of work while old meters were ripped out and new ones installed.

Turns out I couldn’t have been any more wrong. After a little bit of online research, the hardest part of which was getting all of my bills together, I chose the supplier that offered the best deal and signed up on the interweb. After that, everything was switched over remotely.

There was no need for any engineers to visit my house, and I didn’t, wonder of wonders, have to take time off work and sit in (quietly fuming). It was all done on auto-pilot as far as I was concerned. The only thing that I had to do was to take a meter reading for my electricity and gas and phone it in (I could have done it online too if I had wanted), which isn’t too much of a hassle really. It’s something that I normally had to do every 3 months or so anyway for my previous supplier.

I got a good deal on my new utility supplies. I got a really good multi-service discount due to the fact that I shifted my phone, internet, gas and electricity to one single supplier (Telecom Plus). Apart from the already good prices, I got a further 10% off my gas and electricity after 12 months – which is pretty good I think you’ll agree. Having everything consolidated on a single monthly utility bill was also very convenient I must admit.

The only small regret that I have is the fact that I didn’t do it earlier. I could have saved a lot of money a lot sooner. Anyway, no use crying over spilled milk as they say. You can have a look at the options open to you here if you like:
